Irwin and Colton are delighted to have been exclusively engaged by The Scouts Association to recruit several new Safety Officers for their growing Health and Safety team. The organisation has over 500,000 members nationwide, spread across 8,000 hubs; all of which are being run and organised entirely by volunteers. Each of these hubs provides the opportunity for young people from aged 4 upwards to undertake outward bound activities on a regular basis, which can incur challenging risks. This role is an ideal opportunity for someone who likes adventure and outdoor activities.

The role will be home-based with some regional travel every month, including roughly two monthly visits to the Head office in Chingford, East London.

The Scouts prides itself on being an excellent employer (Investors in People gold standard) - the culture is collaborative and supportive, and employees are encouraged to work in a highly flexible way. Their pension, health and leave arrangements are generous and they will provide an excellent induction and training into this unique organisation which really changes young people's lives

Responsibilities of the Safety Officer will include:

  • Acting as a key point of contact for the sites across the region on health and safety matters

  • Helping to ensure that sites and scouting activities are fully compliant with both UK legislation and the Scouts' detailed safety rules and guidance

  • Provide members with specialist technical advice and support in the area of safety, outdoor activities and adventure

  • Conduct health and safety audits in line with the Scouts' Safety Quality Framework, identify areas of non-compliance and take appropriate action to rectify these

  • Work with local volunteer line managers to ensure the delivery of safe scouting to members, through compliance, quality assurance, and data insights

The successful Safety Officer will have:

  • NEBOSH Certificate (or equivalent)

  • Excellent communication skills with proven and relevant experience

  • Ability to fully appreciate the nature of a volunteer delivered service and ability to influence and sensitively achieve compliance with safety requirements

  • Enthusiasm and the desire to really make a difference in health and safety

  • Knowledge of outdoor and adventurous activities, including new and developing trends

  • Valid UK Driver's License

This is an excellent opportunity to work one of the UK's most historical and respected charities. For more information and to apply please contact Oscar Dale at or on 01923 432 673.
