We're delighted to be partnering with Smurfit Kappa, a FTSE 100 company, and one of the leading providers of paper-based packaging solutions in the world, to secure a new Safety Director. This is a unique opportunity to define and shape safety management and strategy across the UK and Ireland region.

With approximately 47,000 employees globally across 36 countries and with annual revenue of €12.8 billion in 2022, the company is a true leader in their field.

Reporting directly to the UK&I Operations Director, this role will oversee and lead the safety strategy across 35 sites based in the UK and Ireland region.

Responsibilities of the Safety Director will include:

  • Leading the overall strategy for safety, in line with European standards and policies, supporting the drive towards continuously improving safety performance

  • Driving improvements in safety performance through strategic gap analysis, developing programmes to reduce risk and strive for best practice

  • Coaching, managing and mentoring a team of Health and Safety leaders across operational sites throughout the UK and Ireland

  • Engaging across the business, including working with business unit leads, function leads and heads of operation, to drive a positive safety culture

The successful Safety Director candidate will have:

  • Proven experience in large and complex organisations, ideally within manufacturing, engineering or an industrial environment

  • Proven leadership and management experience within a national matrix, multi-site role and an ability to communicate and engage with a wide range of stakeholders

  • A strong technical knowledge across health and safety legislation, with relevant professional qualifications and membership of relevant professional body (e.g. CMIOSH)

  • Strong project management experience, with a demonstrable desire for continuous improvement

This is a true leadership position, offering the successful candidate the opportunity to shape policy and strategy across the region for a global pioneering leader in the packaging industry.
