UK Sustainability Lead
Homebased with national travel across the UK

Irwin and Colton are delighted to be partnering with Smurfit Kappa, a FTSE 100 company, and one of the leading providers of paper-based packaging solutions in the world, to secure a new UK Sustainability Lead.

Sustainability is imbedded throughout the organisation due to their circular business model, and they are making fantastic progress on ambitious sustainability targets. Smurfit are now looking for a Sustainability professional to work within the Innovation team. They will work closely with B2B customers, providing solutions and innovative ideas, and helping them achieve their sustainability targets.

With approximately 47,000 employees globally, across 36 countries and with an annual revenue of €12.8 billion in 2022, the company is a true leader in their field. Reporting directly to the UK Innovation Director, this role will take on a new focus within sustainability, to take them to the next level in their journey.

Responsibilities of the UK Sustainability Lead will include:

  • Providing expertise on industry specific sustainability targets and legislation, such as EPR and PPWD, advising how to measure and monitor, ensuring effective delivery, and actioning areas for improvement

  • Understanding customer targets, delivering on existing objectives, as well as developing new objectives, and provide further sustainable solutions

  • Working with a broad range of professionals with varying levels of sustainability knowledge, liaising with internal and external stakeholders, developing and providing sustainability training as required

  • Reporting and communicating issues and successes to the internal sustainability team, to influence decisions regarding strategy across the organisation

  • Attending and speaking at sustainability events, to share and learn about the latest developments and ideas in the industry, forging partnerships with relevant external organisations


The successful UK Sustainability Lead candidate will have:

  • Experience working in a Sustainability position within FMCG, manufacturing, retail or similar industry, OR experience in a packaging role with a large focus on sustainability

  • Excellent industry knowledge and experience working with a broad range of stakeholders

  • Experience speaking at events / webinars, or the ambition to do so, to share knowledge benefiting the industry as a whole

  • Strong understanding of sustainability regulations and legislation, ideally with EPR and PPWD experience

  • Strong academic background alongside relevant professional qualifications / Membership
